What should I wear?
Wear whatever feels comfortable and makes you feel confident. Bringing a couple outfits with you is a good idea. Also, as much as I love graphic tees, solid colors and patterns work better.
For families or groups, wear colors that look good with each other, but don’t wear matching clothes. Coordinating everyone in all white? Not a good look. Wear clothes that look like you!
Another thing: give your clothes some thought. Plan out your outfits ahead of time. Do you want to be able to move around much during the photo shoot? Who else is going to be in the picture and what are they wearing?
Feel free to email me for help with your outfits, and check out my Pinterest boards for ideas.
What should I know about animal photo sessions?
I like to get to know your animal. Everyone has a different personality, and for some, meeting a stranger with a big camera could make them a little uncertain. Having a few minutes at the beginning of the session to meet them and letting them sniff the camera or whatever they need to do can help them feel more comfortable for the photo shoot. Telling me about the animal ahead of time also helps a little too, so I can prepare for the sessions to meet their needs. Are they food motivated? Picky about what they eat? Active? Do they have any injuries or sensitive spots?
Bring your animal’s favorite toy or treat. I’ll bring some with me as well, but some are more likely to get excited over their own toy.
Let your dog be himself/herself! That will get the best, most natural photos of him/her. While it’s nice if your dog knows how to sit or other commands, it’s not neccessary for the photo session, and we want his or her personality to show for you to enjoy in the pictures for years to come.
Another suggestion for dogs is to excersise them before the photo session; it tends to get out a lot of their energy, making them more relaxed and less anxious when it’s time for the camera. Also, feeding in the hour before the session is not recommended because then they’re less likely to respond to treats.
Also, don’t forget to have fun with it! Join in on the pictures with your precious animal, play with them, relax. It makes any photo shoot go so much easier, plus not only does it benefit you and me, but also the animal, as they tend to react to your energy.
What should I know about child, family, or other portrait photo sessions?
I like to get to know you. Tell me about yourself or your child. Everyone is different. What excites you? What makes you sad? Are you allergic to anything? It’s helpful to know a few things ahead of time, expecially with children. (I have a sheet to fill out about the children before the session to help me prepare.) Do they have a favorite toy? Bring it! That can help make the kid feel more comfortable. The main thing for you to do during the photo session is to relax and have fun.
